Menurut masyarakat setempat, dulu mereka membangun pura ini atas nasehat Mpu Kuturan untuk menghormati baktinya ke Hyang Dewi Danu sehingga mereka juga turut mendirikan patung Dewi Danu yang terletak di dekat area Pura, patung ini menjadi sebuah Landmark yang unik di Desa Songan. Setiap tanggal 19 September Umat Hindu yang tersebar di seluruh Bali bahkan sampai ada yang dari Lombok dan Jawa mengunjungi pura tersebut. Banyak petani (kelompok subak) membawa hasil panennya sebagai persembahan atas perairan yang selama ini dianugrahkan oleh Bhatara yang bersthana di Pura Hulun Danu Songan. Setiap tanggal 19 September ini masyarakat di desa Songan juga ikut berpastisipasi untuk mempertunjukkan tarian-tarian khas dari desa mereka sendiri yaitu Tari Baris Gede, Tari Tumba Barat, dan Tari Tumba Selem.
According to the local community, they used to build this temple on the advice of Mpu Kuturan to honor their devotion to Hyang Dewi Danu so they also co-founded the statue of Dewi Danu located near the temple area, this statue became a unique Landmark in Songan Village. Every 19 September Hindus people who spread throughout Bali even to those from Lombok and Java visits this temple. Many farmers (the subak group) brought their crops as offerings for the waters which had been awarded by Bhatara who held the Temple of Hulun Danu Songan. Every September 19th, the community in Songan village also participates to demonstrate typical dances from their own villages, namely Baris Gede Dance, West Tumba Dance, and Tumba Selem Dance.

Beautiful place. You will be hassled about getting a guide on your way down there. Get the guide, the trek up is unmarked and difficult. A guide will make it a lot easier. Plus, the guide will tell you about the mountain and be very helpful.
